Masseter botox relaxes the thick chewing muscle at the angle of your jaw. The medicine is botulinum toxin type A, and “botox” is simply the name most people use. People consider it for clenching-related jaw pain or a square lower face. Below, we cover timing, results and side effects.

What Does Masseter Botox Actually Do?
In short, it weakens the muscle for a few months without surgery. The toxin blocks the chemical signal that tells the muscle to contract. As a result, clenching force drops and pressure on the teeth eases. Then, as the effect wears off, the muscle gradually regains its strength.
Finding the masseter with your fingertips
Place your fingertips in front of your earlobes and clench; the muscle that bulges is the masseter. Night-time grinding keeps it working for hours, so it aches by morning. That is why many people searching for masseter botox first notice tired jaws on waking.
The nerve signal the toxin interrupts
Muscles contract when nerve endings release a messenger called acetylcholine. Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks that release. So you still talk, eat and smile, but clench with less force. After several months, the nerve endings form new connections and normal strength returns.
- Masseter
- The thick muscle running from the cheekbone to the angle of the lower jaw; it powers chewing and clenching.
- Bruxism
- Clenching or grinding the teeth, either during sleep or while awake.
- Botulinum toxin type A
- A prescription medicine that reduces nerve-to-muscle signalling for several months.
- Masseter hypertrophy
- Enlargement of the masseter that can make the lower face look wide or square.
- Risorius
- A small facial muscle that pulls the corner of the mouth sideways when you smile.
- Occlusal splint
- A custom night guard that covers the biting surfaces and protects enamel from grinding.
Jaw Pain or Jawline: Who Considers Masseter Botox?
Two groups ask about it most. The first are adults who clench and wake with sore jaws. Others want a narrower lower face because the muscle has become bulky. For either goal, a dental examination comes first. After all, a wide jaw can reflect bone shape rather than muscle.
If clenching is the main problem
Botox in the masseter lowers clenching force, which often eases muscle pain and morning stiffness. However, it does not protect enamel the way a splint does. Unsure whether you clench or grind? Our guides to teeth clenching and teeth grinding describe the typical signs.
Jawline slimming: what the evidence says
Many people choose masseter botox for a slimmer jawline, and the jaw angle can look softer as the muscle thins. Still, the research behind this cosmetic use is thin. So agree on realistic goals before treatment. If your concern is the teeth themselves, smile design is a separate option.
The Cochrane review screened 683 references and assessed 23 full-text articles. None met its inclusion criteria. As a result, it included no controlled trial on this cosmetic use.

Masseter Botox Results Timeline: What Happens When?
Most people feel their clenching ease within one to two weeks. An NHS hospital leaflet says the benefit can take up to 14 days. Visible slimming is slower and builds over the following weeks. The effect then fades gradually, usually after three to six months.
| Time after treatment | What you may notice | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| First 1–3 days | Tenderness at the injection points, sometimes a small bruise | Avoid pressing or massaging the area |
| Up to 2 weeks | Clenching feels weaker; tough food may tire the jaw | Choose softer food and attend your review |
| Weeks 4–8 | Peak effect on jaw pain and bite force in bruxism trials | Keep wearing your night guard if you have one |
| Around 3 months | Muscle visibly slimmer; one review reports about 31% less thickness on ultrasound | Discuss whether a repeat makes sense |
| 3–6 months | Strength and bulk slowly return | Repeat only if symptoms or goals call for it |
Repeat sessions: symptoms, not the calendar
Clenching habits usually return once the toxin wears off. Therefore, bruxism patients review the need every few months. A 2025 review describes one large series of patients. In it, half needed a second injection after four to seven months.
Masseter Botox Side Effects: What Is Common, What Is Rare?
Most side effects of masseter muscle botox are mild and temporary. Tenderness, swelling or a small bruise are the most common. Some people notice chewing fatigue with tough food for a few weeks. Less often, the toxin reaches nearby smile muscles. One side of the smile may then look uneven for a while.
Why a smile can turn lopsided
The risorius and zygomatic muscles, which pull the corners of your mouth, sit just in front of the masseter. If some toxin drifts into them, one corner may lift less than the other. The change is temporary because those muscles recover. So clinicians inject low and towards the back of the muscle.
Red flags: when to go to A&E
Difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing needs emergency care straight away. The same applies to double vision, a drooping eyelid or widespread weakness. These signs may mean the toxin has spread, so go to the nearest emergency department.
Is Masseter Botox Safe for Everyone?
Not for everyone. Treatment is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis raise the risk of excessive weakness, so clinicians usually advise against it. Skin infection over the muscle also means waiting. Anyone with a previous allergic reaction to botulinum toxin should not have it.
Medicines matter too, because aminoglycoside antibiotics and muscle relaxants can strengthen the toxin’s effect. Masseter botox is a medical treatment, so share your full health history.
Teeth, joint, muscle: the assessment
First, the dentist checks your teeth for wear and cracks. Next, they test whether your jaw joint clicks or locks. Then they feel both muscles while you clench. Joint pain has other causes too; our page on jaw pain explains them.
Night Guard or Masseter Botox: Which Comes First?
For most people who grind, a night guard comes first because it shields the teeth from wear. Masseter botox does something different: it reduces the force behind the grinding. A 2023 meta-analysis found that the toxin eased symptoms sooner. Splints, however, gave a more lasting benefit after about nine to twelve weeks.
Stress and poor sleep often drive clenching, and neither option changes those triggers. Our article on stress and teeth grinding covers practical steps alongside treatment.
Masseter botox and night-time grinding: what changes?
It rarely stops completely, because night-time grinding starts in brain activity during sleep. So the toxin weakens each clench rather than stopping the habit. Many people still grind, but with less force and less pain.
Treatment Day and the Two Weeks After
The appointment is short, and most people return to work the same day. After cleaning the skin, the clinician marks the injection points. Then a fine needle places small doses into several spots in each muscle. Most people describe a brief sting rather than real pain.
For a smooth first fortnight after masseter botox, follow these steps:
- Avoid pressing or massaging the injection areas on the first day.
- Wait 24 hours before intense exercise, saunas or steam rooms.
- Use a cold pack briefly if a bruise appears.
- Choose softer food and skip chewing gum for the first weeks.
- Keep wearing your night guard unless your dentist says otherwise.
- Book a review about two weeks after treatment.
- Seek urgent care if swallowing or breathing becomes difficult.
